Scale
Vegetables and Produce
- 1 pound fresh okra, sliced into 1/2 inch pieces
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 small green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup diced tomatoes (fresh or canned)
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Seafood
- 1 pound raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
Liquids and Sauces
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Spices and Seasonings
- 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Okra: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced okra and cook for about 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the okra begins to soften and its sliminess reduces.
- Sauté Vegetables: Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet and cook for about 4 minutes until they soften.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Simmer Sauce: Add the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper (if using), and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Cook Shrimp: Add the shrimp to the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until they turn pink and are fully cooked through.
- Finish and Garnish: Stir in the lemon juice, then remove from heat. Sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving to add brightness and fresh flavor.
Notes
- Fresh okra gives the best texture, but frozen sliced okra is a convenient alternative.
- Serve with steamed white rice or warm cornbread for a complete Southern meal.
- Adjust the amount of Cajun seasoning and cayenne pepper to suit your preferred spice level.
