Description

This Marinated Tofu recipe offers the best flavor by soaking firm tofu in a delicious blend of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, maple syrup, garlic, and ginger. The tofu is pressed, marinated, and pan-fried to crispy perfection, making it perfect for serving over rice, noodles, or salads. It’s a simple yet flavorful way to elevate tofu for a satisfying and healthy plant-based meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Tofu

  • 1 block firm tofu (14 oz), drained and pressed

Marinade

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

Garnish (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon green onions, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Drain and press the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap it in a clean kitchen towel, place a heavy object on top, and press for 15–20 minutes to ensure it absorbs the marinade well.
  2. Make the Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, maple syrup (or honey), minced garlic, and grated fresh ginger until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  3. Marinate the Tofu: Cut the pressed tofu into cubes or slices according to your preference. Place the tofu pieces in a shallow dish or a resealable zip-top bag, pour the marinade over them, toss gently to coat evenly, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours to absorb maximum flavor.
  4. Cook the Tofu: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a small amount of oil. Once hot, add the marinated tofu pieces and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side until they turn crispy and golden brown.
  5. Serve: Remove the tofu from the skillet and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions, if using. Serve immediately over rice, noodles, or in salads for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu properly is essential for good texture and to help the tofu absorb the marinade flavors.
  • If you prefer, you can use honey instead of maple syrup for a slightly different sweetness.
  • Marinate the tofu for at least 30 minutes, but longer times (up to 2 hours) enhance the flavor more deeply.
  • For a vegan option, choose maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Use firm tofu for best results as it holds shape better during cooking and marination.
