Description

These irresistible Churro Cruffins combine the flaky layers of croissants with the sweet, cinnamon-sugar coating of churros, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for breakfast or a decadent snack, these cruffins are easy to prepare using puff pastry sheets and deliver a delightful texture and flavor with every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Butter & Egg Wash

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin or line with muffin papers to ensure the cruffins do not stick during baking.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Place the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll each sheet to a thickness of about 1/8 inch to make them slightly thinner and enhance flakiness.
  3. Mix Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, thoroughly combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for a sweet and spicy coating.
  4. Cut & Stack Pastry: Cut each puff pastry sheet into 4×6-inch rectangles. Stack two rectangles together to achieve six stacks total, which will create the layers in your cruffins.
  5. Brush with Butter & Add Flavor: Generously brush the top of each stack with melted butter and sprinkle cinnamon sugar over each piece to ensure even coverage for a deliciously sweet crust.
  6. Form & Place in Muffin Tin: Roll each stack tightly into a spiral or log shape, then place them upright in the prepared muffin tin cups.
  7. Egg Wash: Beat the egg and whole milk together, then brush this mixture over the tops of each cruffin to help achieve a shiny and golden finish while baking.
  8. Bake: Bake the cruffins in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes until they puff up and turn a deep golden brown on top.
  9. Coat with Extra Cinnamon Sugar (Optional): After cooling slightly, brush the cruffins lightly with additional melted butter and roll them in more cinnamon sugar for an extra-sweet and flavorful finish.

Notes

  • Make sure puff pastry sheets are properly thawed to room temperature for easier handling and rolling.
  • For a crispier texture, be sure to roll the puff pastry thinly but not so thin that it tears.
  • If you prefer, substitute milk with cream for a richer egg wash.
  • Be careful not to over-bake, as puff pastry can dry out; golden brown is ideal.
  • These cruffins are best enjoyed warm but can be stored at room temperature for up to two days.
