Description

A comforting and sweet twist on classic mashed sweet potatoes, this recipe blends tender boiled sweet potatoes with creamy butter, smooth honey, and warm spices for a perfect holiday side dish that’s both easy to make and irresistibly delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potatoes

  • 2 ½ pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

Mix-ins

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • ¼ cup whole milk (or more as needed)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil the sweet potatoes: Place the peeled and chunked sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover them completely with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until the sweet potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork, approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
  2. Drain and prepare for mashing: Drain the water from the pot and return the tender sweet potatoes back into the pot. This helps eliminate excess moisture and prepares them for mashing.
  3. Add flavors and mash: Add the unsalted butter, honey, whole milk, salt, and optional cinnamon and nutmeg to the potatoes. Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, mash the sweet potatoes until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add more milk gradually if needed to achieve your desired consistency.
  4. Adjust seasoning and serve: Taste the mashed sweet potatoes and adjust the salt or honey as preferred. Serve warm as a delicious side dish that complements any meal, especially during holiday gatherings.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, substitute the butter and milk with plant-based alternatives.
  • Adjust the amount of honey depending on your sweetness preference.
