Description
A comforting and sweet twist on classic mashed sweet potatoes, this recipe blends tender boiled sweet potatoes with creamy butter, smooth honey, and warm spices for a perfect holiday side dish that’s both easy to make and irresistibly delicious.
Ingredients
Scale
Sweet Potatoes
- 2 ½ pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
Mix-ins
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons honey
- ¼ cup whole milk (or more as needed)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Boil the sweet potatoes: Place the peeled and chunked sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover them completely with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until the sweet potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork, approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
- Drain and prepare for mashing: Drain the water from the pot and return the tender sweet potatoes back into the pot. This helps eliminate excess moisture and prepares them for mashing.
- Add flavors and mash: Add the unsalted butter, honey, whole milk, salt, and optional cinnamon and nutmeg to the potatoes. Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, mash the sweet potatoes until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add more milk gradually if needed to achieve your desired consistency.
- Adjust seasoning and serve: Taste the mashed sweet potatoes and adjust the salt or honey as preferred. Serve warm as a delicious side dish that complements any meal, especially during holiday gatherings.
Notes
- For a dairy-free version, substitute the butter and milk with plant-based alternatives.
- Adjust the amount of honey depending on your sweetness preference.
