Ingredients
Scale
Spinach Dip
- 1 (10 oz) package frozen chopped spinach (thawed and squeezed dry)
- 1 packet vegetable soup mix (Lipton or Knorr)
- 1 cup sour cream (light version optional)
- 1 cup mayonnaise (light version optional)
- ½ cup chopped onion (or substitute with chopped celery)
- 1 (8 oz) can water chestnuts (drained and chopped)
Bread Bowl
- 1 loaf unsliced bread (firm, rectangular loaf for coffin shape)
Dippers & Decoration
- Blue corn tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, or bread cubes for dipping
- Mini skeleton for decoration (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dip: In a mixing bowl, combine the thawed and drained chopped spinach, vegetable soup mix, sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped onion (or celery), and chopped drained water chestnuts. Mix thoroughly until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to let the flavors meld together for best taste.
- Make the Bread Coffin: Take the unsliced firm rectangular loaf of bread and cut the bottom part by hollowing it out about 2 inches deep, leaving a ¾ inch border around the edges to maintain structure. Scoop out the bread inside carefully and set it aside for later use as dippers.
- Prepare the Lid: Hollow out the inside of the bread ‘lid’ as well, carving about ½ to ¾ inch deep so it can hold some dip if desired.
- Optional Decoration: Attach a breadstick to the front side of the coffin using toothpicks to create a handle effect on the casket for added Halloween flair.
- Assemble the Dip Bowl: Spoon the prepared spinach dip into the hollowed-out bread coffin, making sure it fills the cavity completely and evenly.
- Add Decoration: Place the mini skeleton decoration inside the coffin for a festive Halloween presentation, if desired.
- Serve: Arrange the spinach dip-filled coffin bread bowl on a large platter. Surround it with your choice of dippers such as blue corn tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, or bread cubes including the reserved bread from hollowing out the loaf. Serve immediately and enjoy your spooky Halloween appetizer!
Notes
- Make sure to squeeze out as much liquid from the thawed spinach as possible to avoid a watery dip.
- You can substitute chopped celery for onion if preferred or to accommodate taste preferences.
- Using light versions of sour cream and mayonnaise helps reduce calories and fat content.
- The bread loaf should be firm and rectangular to create a sturdy coffin shape that holds the dip well.
- Prepare the dip at least 2 hours ahead to allow the flavors to develop fully.
- For a vegan variation, substitute sour cream and mayonnaise with plant-based alternatives and use a vegan soup mix.
