Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 4 large russet potatoes, scrubbed clean
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Aluminum foil
Optional Toppings
- Sour cream
- Butter
- Shredded cheese
- Chopped chives
- Bacon bits
Instructions
- Preheat Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, approximately 400°F (200°C), ensuring it’s well heated before cooking the potatoes.
- Prepare Potatoes: Pierce each potato several times with a fork to allow steam to escape during cooking. Rub each potato all over with olive oil, then season evenly with kosher salt and black pepper.
- Wrap Potatoes: Wrap each potato tightly in aluminum foil to retain moisture and prevent burning on the grill.
- Grill Potatoes: Place the foil-wrapped potatoes directly on the grill grates. Close the grill lid and cook for 45 to 60 minutes, turning the potatoes every 15 to 20 minutes to ensure even cooking and prevent scorching.
- Check Doneness: After about 45 minutes, pierce the potato with a knife through the foil to check if it’s tender inside; it should slide in easily. Continue cooking as needed.
- Rest and Serve: Carefully remove potatoes from the grill using tongs. Let them sit wrapped for a few minutes to finish steaming. Then, unwrap the foil and serve hot with your favorite toppings such as sour cream, butter, shredded cheese, chopped chives, or bacon bits.
Notes
- For a smoky, crispier skin, remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of grilling to allow direct heat to crisp the potato skins.
- To reduce grilling time, parboil the potatoes in boiling water for 10 minutes before wrapping and grilling.
- Make sure to turn the potatoes regularly to cook evenly and avoid hot spots on the grill.
- Use medium to large russet potatoes as they have a starchy texture ideal for baking.
