Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 9 cups Rice Chex cereal (or any similar crispy cereal)
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Cereal: Place the Rice Chex cereal in a large bowl and set it aside, making sure it’s ready to be coated.
- Make the Brownie Batter Coating: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the unsalted butter and creamy peanut butter together in 20-30 second intervals, stirring well after each until fully melted and smooth.
- Add Chocolate and Cocoa: Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and unsweetened cocoa powder to the melted mixture. Microwave again in 20-30 second intervals, stirring until the chocolate chips are completely melted and the mixture is smooth and glossy.
- Flavor the Mixture: Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt if using, to enhance the flavor depth of the coating.
- Coat the Cereal: Pour the chocolate mixture evenly over the prepared Rice Chex cereal. Gently stir the cereal to ensure each piece is well coated with the luscious brownie batter.
- Coat with Powdered Sugar: Transfer the coated cereal into a large resealable plastic bag or container with a lid. Add the powdered sugar, seal tightly, and shake vigorously until every piece is fully coated in powdered sugar, creating a light, sweet finish.
- Chill the Puppy Chow: Optionally, spread the coated cereal on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool and set at room temperature for 10-15 minutes, or speed up the process by refrigerating for 5-10 minutes.
- Serve and Store: Once set, transfer the Puppy Chow into a serving bowl. Enjoy immediately, or store leftovers in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.
Notes
- You can substitute Rice Chex with any similar crispy cereal if preferred.
- Adjust the amount of powdered sugar to your sweetness preference.
- For a nut-free version, try using sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter.
- Make sure to stir thoroughly to coat every cereal piece evenly for the best texture.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature if consumed within a couple of days, otherwise refrigeration is recommended.
